History of Planet Waves~ Chapter 3

I've said many times to band mates that if I ever get hit by a bus, don't stop playin' on account of me, and I imagine Steve might have said the same thing. After playing at Steve's memorial, we took a little more time off. When it came time to find someone to play in Steve's stead (we just couldn't bear to use the word 'replacement'), we were pleasantly surprised to meet the best friend of Steve's son, Keith Jackson, who plays guitar, sings, and knows much about Dylan.

Time to go back into the rehearsal studio, but where? We had been rehearsing at Steve's house. His brother-in-law came to the rescue. He has a small studio in Cotati that we were able to use. And so it was we took up residence in Sonoma County. With the exception of Keith, we were all Sonoma residents.

Pat Nevins had played with David Maciel before and knew of Planet Waves. We were invited by him to be the house band at 'Doing Dylan', Nevins' Bob Dylan 70th birthday celebration, which was held on May 24th, 2011, at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. We had the honor of playing with such luminaries as David Gans, Chris Rowan, Country Joe, and Stu Allen, among others, including Pat himself.

We received a ton of great exposure, reviews and praise, but unfortunately at the time, we had no quality photos or recordings, or a web site ftm, so whatever momentum gained at that Ashkenaz show was somewhat dampened. That didn't stop us from picking up another high profile show, though.

In 2010, David had staged a benefit at the Connecticut Yankee in San Francisco for the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, with the Cancer Sucks Band opening up for Stu Allen and friends. In 2011, another benefit was held with the Cancer Sucks Band opening up for Planet Waves. Guests that night included Mitch Stein, Chris Rowan, Pat Nevins and Ozzie Ahlers. David along with Jimme and Keith performed in both bands that night. Over $1400 has been raised so far for JF and DFCI from the 2 benefits.

Here is some music recorded at the 2nd benefit at the Connecticut Yankee, San Francisco, August 31, 2011.
